Leading international vehicle rental firm Hertz Global Holdings, Inc. announced today that Gil West, a former chief operating officer of GM’s Cruise division and Delta Airlines, will take over as CEO on April 1, 2024, and he will also join the board. West will take over as CEO and member of the board of directors after Stephen Scherr opted to retire on March 31, 2024. For the next few weeks, West and Scherr will collaborate to guarantee a seamless transfer.
Tom Wagner, Vice Chair of the Hertz Board of Directors, expressed how happy they are to have Gil join Hertz as Chief Executive Officer. Gil brings a wealth of expertise leading operationally complex businesses, which will help the Company’s world-class team of over 27,000 worldwide employees—who strive every day to provide exceptional customer service—be even more formidable. We value the input that Stephen has provided over the past two years, particularly on several important strategic projects. Gil will now oversee the ongoing implementation of these projects.
West expressed his excitement about joining Hertz and expanding on its amazing worldwide network and family of companies. Hertz has a 106-year history and a strong brand thanks to its devoted customer base. He is excited to work with the team to realize the company’s potential for its clients, associates, and shareholders.
Gil’s ability to manage more than 70,000 employees at Delta and plan remarkably successful operational turnarounds will put him in a strong position to oversee Hertz. He will be able to expand on the strategic initiatives that Stephen started, such as the resuscitation of our value brands, technology advancements, and business alliances. Colin Farmer, Lead Director of the Hertz Board of Directors, stated that Gil’s past experience in mobility, travel, and transportation will provide him with valuable insight on how to carefully lead Hertz into the future.
According to Scherr, the Hertz team has put in a lot of effort over the past two years to position the business for long-term success in the evolving automotive industry. Hertz is in a strong position for the future, and he anticipates that the business will carry out its plan to become a leader in mobility.
