Aftab Khan has been appointed as the Executive Vice President of Operations, Planning, and Security at PJM Interconnection

Under the leadership of Manu Asthana, President and CEO of PJM, Khan will be in charge of grid operations, transmission planning, cybersecurity, physical security, and business continuity.

Asthana stated, We are pleased to have Aftab’s experience, knowledge, and leadership in this significant new role, which was established to support grid reliability during this increasingly complex energy transition.

As a member of the PJM Executive Team, Khan will collaborate closely with the CEO, other members of the Executive Team, and the PJM Board’s Reliability & Security Committee to manage business continuity initiatives, ensure physical and cybersecurity security for the company, and coordinate PJM’s grid operations and transmission planning.

Prior to joining Eversource Energy, which provides service to 4 million customers in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire, he held the position of Senior Vice President of Engineering. In this role, he oversaw an engineering team of more than 1,000 employees and was responsible for planning transmission and distribution systems, asset management, engineering, grid modernization, operations technology, control room support, and vegetation management.

In the past, he has worked for GE, supervising Grid Solutions in North America. Before that, Khan worked for ABB for 24 years in a number of positions, including President of the Power Systems Division in Saudi Arabia, Senior Vice President of Power Transformers, North America, and Senior Vice President of Grid Systems, North America.

Khan has an electrical engineering bachelor’s degree from the University of Alaska, a master’s degree in electric power engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and an MBA in operations and finance from Carnegie Mellon University.

Khan expressed his eagerness to assist PJM in overcoming the numerous obstacles posed by the energy transformation. The establishment of this new position by PJM demonstrates the organization’s dedication to looking for all-encompassing solutions that prioritize security and dependability as the system changes.

The high-voltage electric power system that serves 65 million people in all or parts of Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia is dependable thanks to PJM Interconnection, which was established in 1927. In addition to managing a competitive wholesale electricity market and organizing the region’s 88,115-mile transmission grid, PJM also plans regional transmission expansion enhancements to preserve grid resilience and ease congestion. Savings of between $3.2 billion and $4 billion are generated annually by PJM’s regional grid and market activities.
