Gap hires Amy Thompson as new Chief People Officer

Today, Gap Inc. announced the hiring of Amy Thompson as Chief People Officer, effective January 22, and Eric Chan as Chief Business and Strategy Officer, effective this week. Both executives will become members of Gap Inc.’s executive leadership group and will answer to Richard Dickson, the company’s president and chief executive officer.

In order to reimagine Gap Inc. for a new era, where operational rigor becomes a consistent cornerstone of strength for us, bolstered by best-in-class talent and a culture of creativity – all paving the way for brand reinvigoration and cultural relevance – Dickson stated that Eric Chan and Amy Thompson will play a critical role in solidifying our foundation.

Chan, who most recently served as the CFO of the Los Angeles Clippers, has over 20 years of experience leading scaled, innovative, and entrepreneurial business strategies, setting financial and organizational goals, and overseeing operations at both Fortune 500 and start-up companies. Chan had been CFO of Loot Crate, where he helped grow the business from a startup to $165 million in revenue, and COO of The Bouqs Company.

Chan expressed her excitement at joining Gap Inc. at this critical juncture in the company’s history, noting the immense potential in the company’s portfolio of famous brands. He is eager to collaborate with the Gap Inc. leadership in order to create and carry out our strategic plan.

Dickson expressed his excitement that Eric will now be in charge of our business and strategy operations, spearheading the creation of Gap Inc.’s corporate strategy and the vital business levers that will allow us to carry it out flawlessly.

Thompson has 25 years of experience as a chief people officer, managing cultural transformation for renowned brands, world-class corporations, and expanded retail operations while maintaining a start-up mindset. Her most recent position was Chief People Officer at Mattel; prior to that, she held top HR positions at Starbucks and Ticketmaster, as well as Chief People Officer at TOMS. Thompson was a successful leader of Mattel’s efforts to improve the company’s mission, purpose, and values. She also supported a complete business transformation with measures to improve personnel, an operating model, and performance reward programs. The Great Place to Work Institute, Fast Company, Forbes, and Fast Company have all acknowledged the culture and outcomes that Thompson has fostered. Sheila Peters, who has been Gap Inc.’s chief people officer since 2020, is succeeded by her.
