Tristan Armstrong Assumes CEO Role at Rocky Mountaineer, Continuing Family Legacy

As the upscale train business celebrates 34 years of operation, Rocky Mountaineer is turning to the next generation. This iconic tourist destination is a family-owned enterprise, with Tristan Armstrong, son of founder Peter Armstrong, assuming the position of chief executive officer (CEO).

My family and I have had a lifelong love for Rocky Mountaineer. Tristan Armstrong remarked, “Being the CEO and continuing this family legacy is a true honor and a privilege, as my sisters Ashley and Chelsea and I have grown up with the business.” He is eager to get even more involved in building a solid internal culture, interacting with our partners, and providing our visitors with outstanding service.

Tristan, who has been a member of the board of directors since 2016, offers significant experience to the role. He previously got experience in maintenance, hospitality, and guest service while holding a variety of positions on the operations and visitor experience teams at Rocky Mountaineer. In addition, Tristan serves as president and CEO of Major Rock Corporation, a multigenerational family office run by the Armstrongs that encompasses the Armstrong Family Foundation in addition to companies in the hotel, real estate, and private equity sectors.

For everyone who supported Rocky Mountaineer—whether they were our incredible staff members, treasured visitors, dependable suppliers, or esteemed partners in the travel and tourism sector—this is wonderful news. Peter Armstrong remarked, “Our family’s dedication to those who mean the most to us—those who helped turn Rocky Mountaineer into a tourism icon—is demonstrated by Tristan’s appointment as CEO.” Tristan is an enthusiastic, culture-driven leader who is fully dedicated to steering the company in the right direction and setting it up for future expansion. Ashley and Chelsea were on the board of directors, and Tristan was the CEO. He was quite proud that our family’s second generation was leading Rocky Mountaineer.

In order to oversee daily operations, Rocky Mountaineer is hiring a president/chief operating officer. Tristan, who is focused on the business’s longer-term growth and strategic direction, will collaborate closely with this function.

Rocky Mountaineer provides opulent rail excursions that highlight some of the most breathtaking landscapes seen in North America. Rocky Mountaineer operates four rail routes: one connects Denver, Colorado, to Moab, Utah in the Southwest United States; the other three connect Vancouver to the Canadian Rockies cities of Banff, Lake Louise, and Jasper in Western Canada. Unmatched travel experiences in its roomy glass-domed train cars are provided by this must-do vacation destination, which is made possible by the breathtaking scenery, delectable food, welcoming staff, and lively environment. Having been established in 1990, Rocky Mountaineer has served over 2.3 million passengers, making it the world’s largest privately-owned luxury tourist train.
