Donald W. Landry, MD, PhD, was elected to the Board of Directors of The Center for Discovery® (TCFD). He will take office on March 1st, 2024.
Donald W. Landry, MD, PhD, held the positions of Chair of the Department of Medicine at the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons and Physician-in-Chief at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center from 2007 until 2023.
Dr. Landry obtained his MD from Columbia University’s Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1983 after completing his PhD in Organic Chemistry at Harvard University under Nobel Laureate R.B. Woodward in 1979. He began his career at Columbia as an instructor in 1985 and became a full professor of medicine in 2004. Dr. Landry was the first director of the Division of Nephrology, where he established the sub-subspecialty of ICU nephrology, and the founding director of the Division of Experimental Therapeutics, which introduces synthetic organic chemists to the Department of Medicine. At the moment, he serves as the American Academy of Sciences and Letters President.
Dr. Landry has inspired students worldwide and offered the kind of leadership that has made Columbia and NewYork-Presbyterian known worldwide via his contributions to our healthcare institutions and the medical field. Dr. Landry has been conducting outstanding groundbreaking research and developing novel medical strategies to address insurmountable health issues for about forty years. Equal in importance to Dr. Landry’s work as a physician and biomedical researcher are the long-lasting institutional contributions he has made to NewYork-Presbyterian and the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. The Department continues to have one of the best internal medicine residencies in the nation, and its teaching and educational initiatives are acknowledged on a national level. During his tenure as head, the department’s NIH-funded research grew by 300 percent. In 2022, the department received over $206 million in NIH assistance, and its ranking among the nation’s medical departments improved from fifteenth to the top five. This year, the department is ranked third. President George W. Bush presented Dr. Landry with the Presidential Citizens Medal, the second-highest civilian award in the country, in the Oval Office in 2008 in recognition of his innovative and varied research as well as his endeavors to enhance human welfare.
