Simon Des-Etages has been appointed as General Counsel and Group Chief Legal Officer by The Bank of N.T. Butterfield & Son Limited, with effect from March 18, 2024. Shaun Morris, who held the position for the previous twelve years until deciding to retire, is succeeded by Mr. Des-Etages.

With a focus on the financial sector, Mr. Des-Etages has over thirty years of experience practicing law in London, New York, Bermuda, and the Cayman Islands. Before joining American Express to provide support to the trade finance, treasury, and securities teams, he began his career as an attorney in private practice, first in the London offices of Slaughter and May and then Baker and MacKenzie. After that, Mr. Des-Etages relocated to Merrill Lynch, where he worked as a senior counsel in the Global Private Client Group for eight years. His most recent position was Global Head of Legal for HSBC’s Global Private Banking and Wealth Management division. Since joining the bank in 2004, he has held increasingly high positions. He graduated with a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Essex in the United Kingdom and a Master of Laws (LLM) from University College London.
